Tricor Information
Tricor (Fenofibrate) is a medication used to improve the lipid profile in the blood. One of its most important uses is to reduce triglyceride levels in the blood of individuals with severe hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides). High triglycerides can increase the risk of a serious condition called pancreatitis.
It is also used along with lifestyle and dietary modifications to reduce LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and other fatty substances in individuals with lipid problems such as primary hypercholesterolemia, or mixed dyslipidemia. Elevated LDL cholesterol levels have been shown to ultimately lead to the development of adverse cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. Fenofibrate is typically prescribed after optimized diet and lifestyle changes have failed to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol and other fatty substances.
Fenofibrate belongs to the fibrate class of antilipemic agents. It works on a molecular level by activating a specific receptor in the body called Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha). Activation of this receptor increases the breakdown (lipolysis) and elimination of triglyceride-rich particles from the blood. It also decreases the liver's production and secretion of VLDL (Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein) particles, which are packed with triglycerides.
Asides its primary effects on triglyceride and LDL cholesterol, it also appears to increase the blood levels of high density cholesterol (HDL), also known as good cholesterol. It's important to note that while fenofibrate is effective in regulating these lipid levels, it hasn't been conclusively shown in all trials to reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes in every patient population, especially when compared to statins, which are another common type of cholesterol medication. However, it appears to be a crucial treatment option for those with very high triglycerides or specific patterns of dyslipidemia.
