Trusopt Information

Trusopt (Dorzolamide Hydrochloride) is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor available as an ophthalmic solution. It is prescribed to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. These conditions are characterized by increased pressure within the eye, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to irreversible vision loss if not managed. Trusopt works by decreasing the production of aqueous humour, the fluid inside the eye, thereby lowering the eye pressure. It can be used alone or in combination with other eye pressure-lowering medications, such as beta-blockers.

Trusopt Side Effects

The most common side effects of Trusopt may include blurred vision, burning, stinging, or itching in the eye, bitter or unusual taste in the mouth, dry eyes, eye redness, headache, nausea, fatigue, paresthesia (tingling or numbness in the hands or feet), and superficial punctate keratitis (small spot-like areas of inflammation on the cornea). Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing), including angioedema, bronchospasm, or severe anaphylaxis.
• Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
• Corneal edema (swelling of the cornea)
• Eyelid crusting or discharge
• Eye pain or discomfort that worsens
• Infrequent but severe systemic reactions typical of sulfonamides, such as aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, other blood dyscrasias, or fulminant hepatic necrosis.
• Iridocyclitis/Uveitis (inflammation inside the eye)
• Kidney stones (rare, but possible with systemic absorption)
• Severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
• Sudden vision changes
• Swelling of the eyelids
• Transient myopia (temporary nearsightedness)

Trusopt Precautions

Do not use Trusopt if you are allergic to Dorzolamide Hydrochloride or other ingredients in this medication, or if you have a known sulfonamide allergy (e.g., to certain antibiotics or diuretics), as Trusopt is a sulfonamide. Do not use Trusopt if you have severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min). Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have kidney disease, liver disease, a history of kidney stones, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or if you have undergone eye surgery (especially corneal surgery or cataract removal), as there may be an increased risk of corneal edema. Trusopt is not indicated for the treatment of acute angle-closure glaucoma. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Trusopt and other medications, such as high-dose salicylates (e.g., aspirin) or other carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (oral or topical), which may increase the risk of systemic side effects. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before using Trusopt. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as animal studies have shown adverse effects. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed before using Trusopt. The excretion of dorzolamide in human milk is unknown; however, a risk to the nursing infant cannot be excluded. Consult your doctor before using this medicine in children, as safety and effectiveness have not been established in pediatric patients under 6 years of age. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before instilling Trusopt and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative (benzalkonium chloride) can be absorbed and cause discoloration or irritation. Since Trusopt can cause temporary blurred vision or dizziness, exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until your vision returns to normal.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Trusopt comes as an ophthalmic solution (eye drops). Wash your hands thoroughly before administering eye drops. Tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid to form a pocket, and instill the prescribed number of drops into the conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. After instillation, gently close your eye for a moment. If you are using other eye medications, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between applications. Do not stop using Trusopt without talking to your doctor, even if your symptoms improve, as discontinuing treatment can lead to increased eye pressure and potential vision damage. Your doctor may perform regular eye exams and monitor your IOP while you are using this medication. Store Trusopt at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
