Zestril and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Zestril
Zestril (Lisinopril) Information
Zestril, which contains the active ingredient lisinopril, is a long-acting ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor. It is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children at least 6 years of age. It is also prescribed to manage heart failure and to improve survival in patients following a heart attack. In some cases, it is used to slow the progression of kidney disease in patients with diabetes and proteinuria. The medication is taken by mouth as a tablet, typically once daily.
The mechanism of action of lisinopril involves blocking the body's production of angiotensin II. This chemical constricts blood vessels. By reducing this substance, Zestril relaxes and widens the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more smoothly and making it easier for the heart to pump. It also lowers aldosterone levels, which help the body excrete excess salt and water through urine, further reducing blood pressure.
Zestril Side Effects
Zestril is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur as the body adjusts to the medicine. Commonly reported effects include a persistent dry cough, dizziness or light-headedness (especially when standing up quickly), headache, fatigue, and mild stomach upset such as nausea or diarrhea.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Kidney issues: A marked decrease in urine output or a sudden rise in blood creatinine levels.
• Liver problems: Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or upper stomach pain.
• Severe allergic reactions (angioedema): Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing; or severe stomach pain.
• Severe low blood pressure: Fainting or extreme dizziness shortly after taking a dose.
• Signs of high potassium levels include muscle weakness, an irregular heartbeat, or tingling in the hands or feet.
Zestril Precautions
Do not use Zestril if you are allergic to lisinopril or have ever had a severe allergic reaction (angioedema) to any other ACE inhibitor. Do not use Zestril with sacubitril-containing medications (such as sacubitril/valsartan); a 36-hour washout period is required when switching between these drugs. It should also not be used in patients with diabetes who are taking aliskiren. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney disease, heart disease, a history of heart attacks, diabetes, or a history of dehydration or low sodium levels.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take. Zestril may interact with diuretics (water pills), potassium supplements, lithium, or other blood pressure medications. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen may reduce the blood-pressure-lowering effect of Zestril and increase the risk of kidney injury, particularly in older adults or dehydrated patients.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed. Zestril should not be used during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, as it can cause serious injury or death to a developing fetus. If you become pregnant, stop the medication immediately and contact your doctor. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Small amounts may pass into breast milk.
Take Zestril exactly as prescribed, ideally at the same time each day. You can take it with or without food. Drink enough water, especially in hot weather or during exercise, to prevent dehydration and excessive drops in blood pressure. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light, and keep out of reach of children.
