What Dosage Strengths Are Available for Zostrix and Generic Capsaicin?

Zostrix and generic capsaicin are available as topical creams in 0.025%/60 gm strength.

Be sure to use this topical medication as directed by your healthcare provider or as stated in the medication pack.

What is Zostrix (Capsaicin) Used For?

Zostrix (Capsaicin) is a topical analgesic, specifically a topical transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) agonist, used for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains in muscles and joints associated with arthritis, simple backaches, strains, and sprains. It is also used to treat the pain associated with post-herpetic neuralgia, the lingering pain that can occur after a shingles infection.

Zostrix works by binding to heat- and pain-sensing receptors on local skin nerves, initially causing them to release a chemical messenger called Substance P, which sends pain signals to the brain. With regular, repeated use, the nerves exhaust their supply of Substance P and can no longer send those pain messages. Simultaneously, the continuous exposure desensitizes the local nerve endings, leaving them dull to pain triggers and producing sustained local relief.

Always use this topical medication exactly as recommended by your healthcare provider. For more information about its use, check out its package insert.

What Side Effects Can Zostrix or Generic Capsaicin Cause?

Zostrix may cause a temporary burning sensation, redness, and a mild rash at the site of application. Some people may also experience a cough, runny nose, rhinitis, and/or breathing problems when the cream dries on the skin and airborne capsaicin enters the respiratory system. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any symptoms of a severe allergic reaction such as hives, skin blistering, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Warnings

Do not use this topical medication if you are allergic to capsaicin or any other ingredient in Zostrix. Do not use this medication during an active shingles infection. It is intended only for the pain that remains after shingles have healed. Caution is advised when prescribing this medication to individuals with uncontrolled hypertension and cerebrovascular events. Before using this topical medication, be sure to inform your doctor about any medical condition you have. Avoid the use of capsaicin with other topical analgesics. Also, before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including any topical medicines, to determine whether it is safe to use with Zostrix.

This medication is generally safe to use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. It is not recommended for use in children younger than 2 years. To avoid accidental exposure to sensitive areas, the cream should not be applied to the face or scalp, as this increases the risk of it entering the eyes or coming into contact with mucous membranes. You must also avoid applying it inside the mouth, ears, nose, or genitals. You should not apply capsaicin within one hour before or after bathing, showering, or using a hot tub, sauna, or steam bath. Avoid wrapping the applied area with a tight bandage. Store this medication at room temperature and keep out of reach of children and pets.
