Zyloprim Information
Zyloprim (Allopurinol) is used to lower blood uric acid levels. It is used to prevent gout attacks, which happen when uric acid crystals build up in the joints. It’s used for long-term control, not for treating pain during an active gout flare. Keeping uric acid levels low also helps prevent uric acid kidney stones. Urate-lowering agents like Allopurinol block the enzyme called xanthine oxidase. This action reduces the amount of uric acid the body makes, lowering uric acid levels in your blood and urine.
Zyloprim Side Effects
The most common side effects of Zyloprim may include diarrhea, drowsiness, skin rash, and upset stomach. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as a severe or blistering rash, breathing difficulties, itching, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Signs of kidney problems, including little or no urine, blood in urine, swelling in feet or ankles;
• Signs of liver problems, including yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, and right upper abdominal pain
Zyloprim Precautions
Do not use Zyloprim if you are allergic to Allopurinol or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have the HLA-B*58:01 gene variant (common in some people of Asian, African, or Native Hawaiian ancestry), an acute gout attack, asthma, dehydration, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Zyloprim and other medications, such as azathioprine, warfarin, ampicillin, diuretics, etc. Allopurinol is not usually recommended during pregnancy. Its safety has not been fully established. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor, as they may recommend a more suitable alternative. Allopurinol passes into breastmilk in small amounts. Although the medicine is compatible with breastfeeding, watch your baby for signs of unusual sleepiness, a rash, or poor feeding. Zyloprim should only be used in children under medical supervision. The dose depends on the child’s weight and kidney function.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Zyloprim comes as tablets. Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break it. Zyloprim is usually taken once a day, after a meal, to help prevent stomach upset. Take it at the same time every day. Keep taking this medicine every day, even if you feel fine. Allopurinol helps prevent gout attacks, but it doesn’t relieve pain during an attack. Do not start it during a gout attack. If you already take Allopurinol and get an attack, keep taking it, but your doctor may add another medicine for pain or inflammation. Your doctor may order blood tests to check uric acid levels and liver and kidney function. Staying well-hydrated is essential for preventing kidney stones and helping remove uric acid. Aim for 6–8 glasses of water per day, unless your doctor instructs otherwise. Store Zyloprim at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
