Zytiga (Abiraterone) Information

Zytiga, which contains the active ingredient abiraterone acetate, is a type of hormone therapy used to treat men with metastatic prostate cancer. It is typically prescribed for castration-resistant prostate cancer (cancer that has spread and no longer responds to medical or surgical treatments that lower testosterone) or for high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer. Because prostate cancer cells rely on male hormones (androgens) like testosterone to grow, Zytiga is used to help shrink tumours or slow their progression. The medication is taken by mouth as a tablet, usually once daily. It must be taken in combination with a steroid medication, such as prednisone or prednisolone. This steroid is necessary to help prevent certain side effects that can occur when Zytiga changes your hormone levels.

The mechanism of action involves inhibiting the enzyme CYP17. While other hormone therapies usually stop the testicles from producing testosterone, Zytiga stops testosterone production in three places: the testicles, the adrenal glands, and the tumour itself. By cutting off these multiple sources of "fuel," the medication helps manage the disease more effectively.

Zytiga Side Effects

Zytiga can cause various side effects as it alters hormone and mineral levels in the body. Commonly reported effects include joint pain or swelling, muscle discomfort, hot flashes, diarrhea, cough, and feeling very tired (fatigue). You may also experience headaches or nausea.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Heart problems: Chest pain, shortness of breath, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.
• High blood pressure or fluid retention: Severe headaches, blurred vision, or sudden swelling in the hands, ankles, or feet.
• Liver damage: Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), dark-colored urine, or severe pain in the upper right stomach area.
• Low potassium levels: Muscle weakness, muscle twitches, or a "pounding" heart sensation.
• Severe infections: Fever, chills, or pain during urination (urinary tract infections are common).

Zytiga Precautions

Do not use Zytiga if you are allergic to abiraterone or any of the tablet's ingredients. It is important to disclose if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or liver problems.

Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including vitamins and herbal supplements. Zytiga can interact with many drugs, including certain blood thinners and medications processed by the liver. If you have diabetes, Zytiga may affect your blood sugar levels, so more frequent monitoring may be required.

Zytiga is not for use by women and can cause severe congenital disabilities if a developing fetus is exposed to it. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle or touch the tablets without protection, such as gloves. Men with female partners of childbearing age should use a condom along with another effective birth control method during treatment and for three weeks after the final dose.

Take Zytiga exactly as your doctor tells you. Take the drug on an empty stomach. You should not eat anything for at least 2 hours before taking your dose, and for at least 1 hour after. Taking this medicine with food can cause your body to absorb too much of it, which may lead to dangerous side effects. Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not crush or chew them. If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose at the regular time the following day. Never take two doses at once. However, if you miss more than one daily dose, don’t just skip it. Contact your doctor for specific instructions. Store the tablets at room temperature in a dry place, out of reach of children and pets.
