Zytiga Information
Zytiga (generic name: Abiraterone Acetate) is a prescription medication for castration-resistant prostate cancer ([CRPC] prostate cancer that has been resistant to medical or surgical treatments to lower testosterone). It is indicated for use of patients who have CRPC, metastatic CRPC, and those who have received chemotherapy with docetaxel. Zytiga is often taken in combination with prednisone, which has been shown to reduce side effects. Zytiga works by lowering the patients' production of androgen. Zytiga blocks androgen production in three places-the testes, the adrenal glands, and in metastatic CRPC, its also blocks androgen production by the tumor itself.
Zytiga Side Effects
Zytiga side effects include joint swelling or discomfort, muscle aches, hot flushes, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, cough, irregular heart beat, and heart burn. These may not be all common side effects associated with Zytiga. Talk to your doctor about side effects that bother you or won't go away. Zytiga may cause serious side effects such as hypertension, low blood potassium and fluid retention. Tell your doctor if you experience dizziness, fast heartbeat, headache, confusion, muscle aches, or pain or swelling in your legs or feet.
Zytiga Precautions
Talk to your doctor before using Zytiga if you have heart or liver problems, or a history of adrenal and/or pituitary gland problems. Talk to your doctor if you are planning to, or become pregnant while using Zytiga. Talk to your doctor about using Zytiga while breastfeeding. Sufficient studies have not been completed. Keep Zytiga away from children.
