What is Instillagel (Chlorhexidine/Lidocaine) Used For?
Instillagel (Chlorhexidine/Lidocaine) is a topical anesthetic and antiseptic combination used to
numb, lubricate, and disinfect sensitive mucosal surfaces before invasive medical examinations or procedures. Specifically, it's used for urethral catheterization, including insertion of indwelling catheters, intermittent self-catheterization, or replacement of suprapubic or fistula tubes.
It is also used during diagnostic urological procedures such as cystoscopy and urethral dilation. It is also used to disinfect mucous membranes and provide local anesthesia during endoscopy, intubation, digital rectal examinations, rectoscopy, and gynecological investigations, as it helps minimize procedural pain and prevent iatrogenic bacterial infections.
The medication provides simultaneous anesthesia, antisepsis, and lubrication. The lidocaine component stabilizes nerve cell membranes, blocking pain signal transmission. It does this by blocking ion movement through specific channels in the nerve membrane that are required to start and carry nerve impulses. This process prevents the nerves from sending pain signals to the brain from the area where the gel is applied. This numbing effect typically starts within five minutes and lasts between 20 and 30 minutes.
The chlorhexidine component provides antiseptic action and is effective against a broad range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, as well as yeasts and fungi. Within 5 to 10 minutes of application to the urethra, it kills the microorganisms present there. This action helps prevent bacteria from moving upward into the body, which could otherwise occur when medical instruments are inserted.
This gel also acts as a lubricant, creating a smooth film over the treatment site. This coating helps ensure germ-free, painless insertion of catheters and other medical instruments.
