Ondissolve Information

Ondissolve (Ondansetron) is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy medications. It is also used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by radiotherapy in individuals undergoing full-body or localized radiation. It is also used before or after surgery to counter the effects of anesthesia, such as nausea and vomiting. It may also be used in several other conditions associated with nausea and vomiting, such as gastroenteritis, alcohol or opioid withdrawal, and migraine headaches. The active ingredient is ondansetron, a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist (also called a serotonin blocker). Chemotherapy and radiation therapies often damage the lining of the small intestine, causing a massive release of serotonin. This excess serotonin stimulates the vagus nerve, causing nausea and vomiting.

Ondansetron works by selectively blocking the action of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) at the 5-HT3 receptors located both in the gastrointestinal tract and the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the brain. When these receptors are blocked, the vomit signal cannot be transmitted to the brain's vomiting center, thereby preventing the physical urge to throw up. This allows patients to undergo life-saving cancer treatments or recover from the side effects of general anesthesia without the debilitating dehydration and physical stress that chronic vomiting causes.
