Ondissolve Information

Ondissolve (Ondansetron) is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy medications. It is also used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by radiotherapy in individuals undergoing full-body or localized radiation. It is also used before or after surgery to counter the effects of anesthesia, such as nausea and vomiting. It may also be used in several other conditions associated with nausea and vomiting, such as gastroenteritis, alcohol or opioid withdrawal, and migraine headaches. The active ingredient is ondansetron, a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist (also called a serotonin blocker). Chemotherapy and radiation therapies often damage the lining of the small intestine, causing a massive release of serotonin. This excess serotonin stimulates the vagus nerve, causing nausea and vomiting.

Ondansetron works by selectively blocking the action of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) at the 5-HT3 receptors located both in the gastrointestinal tract and the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the brain. When these receptors are blocked, the vomit signal cannot be transmitted to the brain's vomiting center, thereby preventing the physical urge to throw up. This allows patients to undergo life-saving cancer treatments or recover from the side effects of general anesthesia without the debilitating dehydration and physical stress that chronic vomiting causes.

Ondissolve Side Effects

Like other medications, ondansetron can cause some side effects. Common side effects of this medication include flushing or warmth, hiccups, constipation, diarrhea, and unusual tiredness or weakness. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, especially on the hands and feet, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• Electrolyte imbalances with symptoms like weakness, fatigue, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat;
• Eye problems such as blurry vision, visual loss;
• Heart problems such as chest pain, chest discomfort, high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, and shortness of breath.
• Liver problems with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes;
• Movement disorders such as loss of coordination or balance, speech or limb movements, muscle spasms;
• Serotonin syndrome with symptoms such as confusion, mood changes, decreased coordination, hallucinations, fever, sweating;

Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Ondissolve Precautions

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to ondansetron, other ingredients in Ondissolve, or any other medicines. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions, including the following:
• Abdominal problems such as paralytic ileus, intestinal obstruction;
• Diabetes;
• Electrolyte imbalance, such as low levels of potassium in the blood;
• Heart disease, including a family history of heart disease or sudden cardiac death;
• High cholesterol levels;
• Liver disease;
• Low blood pressure;
• Nutritional deficiencies;
• Stroke

Current medical guidelines suggest avoiding ondansetron during the first trimester unless necessary. Some studies have indicated a small but statistically significant increase in the risk of oral clefts (cleft lip or palate) when used very early in development. It should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks, as determined by your doctor. Consult your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. Ondansetron passes into breast milk, but it is generally considered safe for use while breastfeeding in the recommended doses. This medication is not recommended for use in children younger than 4 years. It should be used with caution in older adults (65 years and above) as they may be more prone to its side effects.

Taking this medication with some other medications, like apomorphine, is strictly not recommended because it can cause a severe drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness. Medications like rifampin or phenytoin can speed up the metabolism of ondansetron, making it much less effective. Therefore, before using this medication, it is important to inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal products and supplements, to determine whether ondansetron hydrochloride is safe to use with them. Ondissolve is available as orally disintegrating tablets for oral use. Place the Ondissolve tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve completely before swallowing. You must avoid chewing or crushing the tablet to ensure it works correctly. Keep your hands dry when handling the medication to prevent the tablet from breaking down prematurely in the foil. If you are using it for chemotherapy, take your first dose at least 30 minutes before your treatment begins. For surgery, doctors typically administer the dose 1 hour before anesthesia induction. Always follow the specific dosage instructions your doctor prescribes or check out the leaflet in the medicine pack for more details. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
