Gelclair Information

Gelclair (Glycyrrhetinic Acid/Polyvinylpyrrolidone/Sodium Hyaluronate) is a specialized, viscous oral rinse gel used to treat painful sores, ulcers, and raw patches inside the mouth and throat due to conditions such as oral mucositis and stomatitis, which are severe, painful inflammations and ulcerations of the mouth lining that frequently occur as a side effect of chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer. It is also used to treat standard aphthous ulcers (commonly known as canker sores), lesions caused by dental surgeries, and traumatic irritation from braces or ill-fitting dentures.

Gelclair works by forming a thin, durable, protective film directly over the moist surfaces of the mouth and throat. When the mouth lining is damaged or ulcerated, the protective outer cells are lost, leaving the underlying nerve endings completely exposed. This oral formulation uses a sticky, tissue-adhering polymer (polyvinylpyrrolidone, or PVP) to coat these raw areas, while a moisture-binding component (sodium hyaluronate) keeps the tissue hydrated and glycyrrhetinic acid soothes the area. By physically covering the open sores, the gel creates a dense barrier that completely blocks saliva, food particles, and fluids from touching the raw tissue. This mechanical shield prevents external irritants from contacting the exposed nerve endings, preventing pain signals from being triggered without numbing the mouth or requiring pain medications. Gelclair is typically packaged as a concentrated gel in single-dose sachets, which must be diluted with approximately 1 to 3 tablespoons of water, mixed thoroughly, and then used to rinse and gargle for at least 1 minute before spitting out.

Gelclair Side Effects

Reports of side effects are rare with this oral gel, although a transient mild burning or stinging sensation upon initial contact has been reported in highly sensitive or severely denuded tissues. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice signs of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), such as breathing difficulties, a rash, itching, hives, blistering of the skin, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat. Be sure to inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Gelclair Precautions

Do not use this oral gel if you have a known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to any of its active or inactive ingredients. There are no known systemic drug-drug interactions associated with this oral gel, as it acts purely via a surface-level protection mechanism and does not undergo significant gastrointestinal or mucosal absorption. However, before using this medical device, inform your doctor of any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal medicines and supplements, to determine whether it is safe to use with Gelclair. It is also generally considered safe for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women, though you should always consult your healthcare provider before use. It is important to avoid eating, drinking, or performing any oral hygiene procedures for 30 to 60 minutes after using this oral gel. Consuming fluids or solids immediately following use will prematurely wash away or disintegrate the protective layer before it can properly shield the nerve endings. Gelclair is intended for localized symptom relief, but if you don't experience improvement after 7 consecutive days of therapy, consult your doctor. Store at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, do not freeze, and keep away from children and pets.
